HOW TO CREATE A CONVERSATION SPACE

One of the most important spaces in our home is our living room. It truly is the space where we spend the most time. Whether it’s just the two of us (and Toby) snuggled up watching a movie, or a group of our friends hanging out, it’s the central space in our home. You guys can probably relate. Since we used to live in a tiny, 400 square foot apartment, having a conversation space was huge for us. It’s definitely been a work in progress — you guys know we have major issues with constantly wanting to change EVERYTHING. Lol. But we are really happy with how it’s turned out.

The first thing you want to do when creating a conversation space is find an anchor. That’s the main piece in the space that will literally anchor everything — it will be your starting point for everything else. In our case, we chose a large sectional. We had always wanted a sectional. We just love that you can choose any shape, size, and color you want. We wanted something relatively neutral, hence the gray choice. It was a good starting point for us. We knew that once we had the sectional in place, we could work around it to create the space.

Since we did go with a neutral sectional color, we are not locked into any particular room style. We like to switch things up by using different colors and texture with our pillows. Some of the pictures in this post are from a few months ago just to give you an idea of what we’re talking about. You aren’t limited to anything. The biggest piece of advice is this — PLEASE DON’T USE MATCHING PILLOWS. There are so many options out there. We might do a post dedicated JUST to pillows lol.

The next step was finding the perfect coffee table. We are obsessed with low profile tables. They don’t take up a ton of visual space but still add another layer to the room. We decided to go with a round marble coffee table that was super low to the ground. We have so many sharp edges in our home that we needed to break things up. Adding the low, round table allows easy flow and visual dimension. Plus, we are suckers for marble!

We struggled with the next step for a while. We wanted to close in the room to create a cozy conversation space. When you have seating all around the room, no matter where you sit, you can be in direct line of sight of everyone — that is so important. But we didn’t want the space to feel blocked off from everything else in our home (dining room, kitchen, etc.). Our solution? We found these amazing black bucket chairs at Target. Since they almost have a wicker look, you can see straight through to the others parts of our home. This was the perfect solution to close in the space without completely blocking it off. Oh, and are you ready for the best secret of all? They are outdoor chairs! Yes, they are intended to be used outside but we knew they would look perfect inside. We added some pillows and voila! See, you don’t always have to use things the exact way they are intended to be used.

The last two pieces we added were two faux fur footstools — though we really use them as extra seating. We knew that we didn’t originally have enough seating. By adding the black bucket chairs and footstools, our friends aren’t crammed on the floor when we are hanging out. The stools are in front of the TV but are low enough that nothing is blocked. They also help close in the space even more while still giving us the open feeling we love. It’s the best of both worlds!

Remember, you can also mix and match textures and colors. We love adding faux fur pillows and throw blankets to add a natural element to a room. It may not be the first thing you think about when creating a conversation space, but adding layers and dimension helps pull the room together and adds a cozy element.

The room now really feels like a space where we can entertain, watch movies, binge the housewives lol, and just relax. No matter how big or small your room, you can always turn it into a comfortable and cozy conversation space. Try a few of these tips and see what you come up with!
