Double cleansing has been something we’ve been doing since we first started our skincare journey. But it doesn’t seem like it’s common practice for most people. So we decided to break it down here on the blog in hopes you might try it out — your skin will thank you.
This is a method very popular in Korean skincare routines. It’s essentially washing your face twice but each wash is actually doing something different. First, you use an oil-based cleanser to draw out oil-based impurities. This can range from sunscreen, sebum, makeup, and other pollutants from the day. Once you finish with the first wash, you follow up with a water-based cleanser. Now, this is when the sweat and dirt start to rinse away. Without that first step, you can’t get to everything else. By doing these steps, you can prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Your skin is left feeling super clean and smooth.
Now to break down a few myths. We know you probably have some questions…
Should I be using an oil-based cleanser with oily skin?
Yes. We’ve talked about this many times here on the blog. Oily skin actually produces oil-based impurities so this cleansing method is exactly what you need. Also, oil combats oil. Don’t believe anything or anyone that tells you otherwise.
Can you over-clean your skin?
Sure, it is possible to strip your skin and over-clean, however, this method won’t do that. Oil-based cleansers are only acting on those oil-based impurities. That means all of the natural and good stuff on your skin stays put. You just want to be sure you are choosing a gentle water-based cleanser and you’ll be left will clean, smooth skin.
You don’t need to double cleanse in the morning.
Even though the morning is much different than the end of the day, it’s still important to double cleanse in the morning. There are still impurities from the night that need to be washed away. Plus, your skin will be prepped and primed for whatever the day throws your way.
The main point we’re trying to get across is how essential double cleansing is if you want to up your skincare game. If you’ve been struggling with clogged pores (aren’t we all?), this method is exactly what you need. Let us know if you already double cleanse or plan on trying it out! Until next time…
