Why We’re Combining Our Last Names

We’ve been having a lot of fun sharing our wedding planning process with you all so far. We are still trying to plan out everything we want to share so please feel free to send in any requests. This isn’t exactly wedding related but more so about our marriage and something we decided a few years ago. As you know, we’ve been together for 9 years. We knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together pretty quickly after we officially started dating. When it came to our last names, we both hold a lot of value in those. They represent our separate families and we don’t want to lose those. That’s why we’ve decided to combine our last names. We will both change our last names to ‘Rubino-Nelson’ once we’re married. Let’s first answer the question you probably have right away — why are we doing that order and not the reverse? Well, it’s simple — we like the sound of it. We can’t even begin to tell you how many times we sat on the couch saying Rubino-Nelson, Nelson-Rubino. Over and over again. We realized the reverse doesn’t flow as well in our eyes. We also do want children one day and the thought of them having both of our last names makes us smile. It’s like they’ll have a piece of each of us.

For us, a joint last name is perfect. As much as we do love our last names and want to keep them, we want to take each others as a sign of commitment. It feels corny to say but it represents two becoming one. It really does mean a lot to us. We can’t wait for that day to come! Just a little over 400 days to go…but who’s counting.
