Surprise! One tree just wasn’t enough. Now that we moved into the new house, we have a lot more room to decorate. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity of filling the basement with holiday cheer. Since we always use a faux tree, we decided this would be the perfect year to go with a real one for tree number two. The main reason we always use a faux tree is because of how early we decorate. If we used a real tree, it wouldn’t survive until Christmas. Since we put this one up mid-December, we knew we would be in the clear. We found the cutest little balsam fir last week at Home Depot. Side note: maybe we will chop one down next year! The basement ceiling is low so we couldn’t go with one with a ton of height. We ended up choosing a 6-foot tall tree. For comparison, the tree upstairs is 9 feet. Also, we totally forgot how good real trees smell! We buy the scent inserts for the fake one upstairs haha. We are loving the fresh scent filling the basement.
For the theme this year, we did some recycling. Remember last year’s theme? It was all about the peppermint. We thought it would be fun to go with the peppermint theme again. We definitely wanted to do something different than the emerald upstairs. There is so much green on the main floor so we wanted to bring some bright color to the basement. Plus, there aren’t any windows down there so it really helps brighten things up. We did sprinkle in some silver ornaments so it’s not fully red. That helps break up the tree a bit and adds some contrast.
Instead of choosing a tree topper, we decided to really go in heavy with peppermint pieces towards the top. It really creates a statement — plus, the ceiling is so low anyway (7 feet). For the bottom of the tree, we added some wrapped gifts to fill out the space. For the tree skirt, we used a white fur blanket. We also brought back the deer from last year. Do you remember him?? We got him on MAJOR sale last year at Target! He is big enough that a child could literally ride on his back lol.
We are so happy with how it all came together. It’s exactly what we envisioned. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below! We hope you are just as excited about Blogmas this year as we are. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post!
